This is the first book I have read by Elizabeth Chadwick and shall look forward to reading more of her books. Set in during the rebellion of Henry II's sons and wife, Shields of Pride is about Joscelin de Gael, illegitimate son of William de Rocher and a mercenary soldier.

Quick to anger, he feuds with de Rocher's jealous sons.4/5. I really love the historical novels of Elizabeth Chadwick and Shields of Pride is an excellent example of Ms Chadwick's work.

Set in AD during the reign of Henry II and with the bloody warfare associated with that era the characters come alive on the page and you can almost feel the sword blows from the protagonists/5(65).

"Shields of Pride" is written by Elizabeth Chadwick, a great historical writer. I placed her on the second rate after Philippa Gregory. This is very good interesting book for those who love to read more about Normandy, England history from and further stories on years/5(64).

The year is King Henry's efforts to crush his rebellious sons ignite bloody border skirmishes throughout the land. Yet it. The facts of Jane Austen's life can be picked up in any number of other biographies, but the strength of this short book is in Carol Shields' appraisal of Austen's influences and writing processes.

Her research is tempered with empathy for her subject, making for an absorbing read/5(). I really love the historical novels of Elizabeth Chadwick and Shields of Pride is an excellent example of Ms Chadwick's work.

Jane Austen, raised on the wryly honest literature of the 18th century, certainly might have agreed, and while Carol Shields has not written a work of fiction, she has written a book that anybody who cares about Jane Austen must read if they want to know her by: 3.The year is King Henry's efforts to crush his rebellious sons ignite bloody border skirmishes throughout the land.

Yet it is a time of triumph for mercenary Josceline de Gael, bastard son of the king's most trusted ally. Victorious on the battlefield, de Gael suffers sweet defeat when his heart is conquered by the lovely Linnet de Montsorrel. To return to Shields of Pride: Due to all the above misery, it was never published in paperback in this country, although there is a small print run hardcover edition.
